Mental Health First Aid USA is an evidence-based training that teaches participants how to identify, understand and respond to someone who is experiencing a mental health or substance-use challenge.

MHFA PROGRAM DESCRIPTION & PARTICIPANT OUTCOMES

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based training that teaches participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs and symptoms of a mental health or substance use challenge in adults ages 18 and over. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it builds mental health literacy, providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address a potential mental health or substance use challenge.

By the end of the training, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose of Mental Health First Aid and the role of the Mental Health First Aider.
  • Identify the impact of mental health and substance use challenges on the wellbeing of American adults.
  • Explain that recovery from a mental health or substance use challenge is possible.
  • Describe the principles of safety and privacy for both the Mental Health First Aider and the person receiving first aid.
  • Explain the 5 steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE).
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact adults.
  • Evaluate the impact of early intervention on mental health and substance use challenges.
  • Apply the appropriate steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) to a non-crisis scenario where a person shows early signs of a mental health or substance use challenge.
  • Apply the appropriate steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) to a non-crisis scenario where a person shows worsening signs of a mental health or substance use challenge.
  • Apply the appropriate steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) to a crisis scenario where a person shows signs of a mental health or substance use crisis.
  • Choose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of Mental Health First Aid in a crisis or non- crisis situation.

Mental Health First Aid Policies

For participants enrolled in our Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) with Self-Paced Pre-Work and Live Instructor Led Training, it is essential to understand the policies regarding cancellations, registration transfers, and rescheduling. Please familiarize yourself with the following guidelines:

Certificate of Completion Policy

To obtain a Mental Health First Aid Training Certificate, participants must:

  • Complete their Self-Paced Online Pre-Work prior to their scheduled Live Instructor Led Training
  • Attend the entire Live Instructor Led Training duration
  • Make up missed Live Instructor Led Training hours
  • Abstain from engaging in other meetings or phone calls during the training, except during designated break times and lunch
  • Ensure punctuality by not arriving late to the training, returning from breaks, or leaving early

Failure to adhere to these rules will result in continued participation without receiving a refund or certificate of completion.

Cancellation Policy

  • Cancellations are accepted within 30 days of purchase in writing via email to [email protected] with the subject line "MHFA Cancellation Request" indicating the date purchased, full name, and email of the person who purchased the training. The purchaser will receive an email including a refund receipt with the order number and refund details. 
  • Cancellations after 30 days of purchase will incur a $75 change fee. Therefore, only a partial refund (your order minus $75) will be provided. 
  • No refunds or certifications will be given for: late cancellations (within 2 weeks the scheduled Live Instructor Led Training), those who do not complete the training, or those who to do not attend their scheduled Live Instructor Led Training.

Registered Participant Transfer Requests, Rescheduling, and Fees

  • All requests must be submitted in writing via email to [email protected] with specific subject lines as indicated below to assist in response efficiency.
  • For participant registration transfers, email your request to [email protected] with the subject line "MHFA Registration Transfer" at least 30 days before your scheduled Live Instructor Led training start date, indicating the original name of the registered participant and the full name and email of the new participant you would like to register in their place. The original participant's MHFA account will be cancelled and a new account will be created for the transferred participant. The new transferred participant is required to complete all Pre-Work prior to joining their scheduled Live Instructor Training.
  • For Live Instructor Led Training rescheduling, email your request to [email protected] with the subject line "MHFA Reschedule Request" at least 30 days before your scheduled Instructor Led training indicating the original training date and location and dates and location of your new preferred training time. 
  • Any participant registration transfers and training rescheduling requests within 30 days of the Instructor Led training will incur a $75 change fee. 
  • Transfers or rescheduling within two weeks of the Live Instructor Led Training date will be treated as late cancellations, no refund or certification will be provided.
  • Live Instructor Led Trainings are implemented in accordance with MHFA guidelines. Rescheduling may occur by the instructor should minimum attendance requirements not be met. You will be notified via email 2 days prior to the Live Instructor Training if this occurs and offered other Live Instructor Training date options.

This policy is due to the high level of customization based on the number of registered participants and space limitations as well as the specific courses specific guidelines. We appreciate your commitment to your Mental Health First Aid training, certification, and practice.
